GO Expansion: on track toward the future

It’s the next move toward bringing the future of transit here today.

It’s the next move toward bringing the future of transit here today. Those green trains being made available everywhere, all the time, to hop on board and get to where you need to GO. That means more convenience and arriving there quicker.

New service starts with finding the right partners to make it happen. In the coming weeks, Metrolinx and Infrastructure Ontario will be releasing the Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Maintain (DBFOM) GO Transit expansion projects.

Think of the size and scope of what that means. A transformation is taking place with the largest single investment in rapid transit in Canada. There are 400 separate projects across more than 40 municipalities beginning. That includes electrifying the rail network in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA), operating a new electric fleet of trains and building 12 brand new GO stations.

“We are writing a new chapter of unprecedented transit building,” Metrolinx President and CEO Phil Verster said. “This step allows us to move forward with the work needed across the network to connect people for generations to come.”

There is also a lot more work going on behind the scenes. Contracts for more than seven grade separations, 30 station renovations, dozens of bridge and tunnel modifications as well as new train layover facilities have been offered.

The expansion of GO Transit has already begun with more service being offered on a number of routes, including trains running all day along the Barrie and Stouffville lines. Trips to and from Union Station in Toronto will soon be operating more frequently on weekends as well. In the end, service will be quadrupled over the next decade.

No more wishing it will eventually come this way. The future of transit is now and it means you getting there faster. And that is exactly what you’ve been looking for.
