On any given day, being approached on the GO train by a stranger would normally be cause for alarm. When it’s a group of high school students dressed in hula skirts, carrying signs and balloons though, chances are you’re safe.

Graduating students from Bowmanville High School recently made their way into downtown Toronto via bus and train, performing random acts of kindness for fellow GO Transit customers. It’s all a part of the ‘Students on the Leading Edge’ (SOLE) program and #CommuteWithKindness initiative that has been going on for the past three years.

“We are bringing little gifts, treats, everything around to brighten up people’s day,” one student said. “It feels great just giving back, knowing you can brighten up somebody else’s day.”

Those being met with a smile couldn’t help but offer one in return. One passerby at Union Station appreciated the gesture.

“It’s really nice because school is one thing, real life is something else,” he said. “To go out and just see people smile and do something like that is just nice.”
