Transformation of Mississauga creek now complete
Progress continues on the Hazel McCallion Line with completion of historic Mary Fix Creek
Jun 18, 2025
The flood-proofing of Mary Fix Creek in Mississauga’s Port Credit neighbourhood is now complete, marking a significant step forward in the Hazel McCallion Line project.
While the primary focus of this project is the construction of a new 18-kilometre light rail transit (LRT) line, it also includes essential community upgrades including flood protection and restoration of Peel Gardens Park.
Revitalizing Mary Fix Creek
Mary Fix Creek, which runs from Old River Road to the Credit River, has long been essential in protecting the Port Credit area from flooding and soil erosion. With urbanization and climate change, the creek required revitalization to maintain its role as a flood management system. As part of the project, 400 metres of the creek has been widened utilizing advanced hydraulic modelling to improve flood control, safety and resilience to storm damage.
The design ensures the creek has the capacity to handle a 100-year flood — an extreme weather event that could otherwise cause significant damage to the local area. It also ensures the new transit line is better protected against these risks. Restoration work included the planting of native trees, shrubs and plants along portions of the creek and in Peel Gardens Park to enhance biodiversity and restore the area's natural habitat.

Key upgrades and what’s next
With construction on the creek now complete, the final touches surrounding the area are being put in place. A protective fence is being installed, sidewalks along Oriole Avenue are being poured, and the surrounding roads are being restored.
Lastly, Peel Gardens Park is set to be reinstated by the end of Summer 2025. Alongside the creek revitalization, the recently completed Eaglewood Bridge, which spans Mary Fix Creek, is now open and helping to improve traffic flow in the area. Replacing the old Inglewood Bridge, this new bridge is also part of the broader upgrades for the Hazel McCallion Line and will enhance connectivity to the LRT guideway for pedestrians, motorists and cyclists.
