Metrolinx takes part in city-wide clean-up program
The transit agency chipped in for Clean Toronto Together, an event held in honour of Earth Day.
Apr 24, 2023
Metrolinx staff and local community members recently came together and rolled up their sleeves for the betterment of the planet.
This past weekend (April 22-23), teams picked up trash and debris in more than 12 locations across the city, as part of this year’s Clean Toronto Together campaign.
The campaign, organized by the City of Toronto, aims to clean public spaces during an annual event in support of Earth Day, held around the world every year on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection.
One of the locations was the West Toronto Rail Path. Metrolinx partnered with Grascan Construction to spearhead a clean-up along the trail to help beautify it and get ready for a busy summer ahead.
The area plays a key role in the GO Expansion program. The Kitchener GO Line is adjacent to the extremely well-loved and popular trail.
The construction work in the area is part of the Kitchener Fourth Track Project – a project that will see an additional track built within the Kitchener GO Line from Lansdowne Avenue to Dupont Street, to enable two way, all-day 15-minute service.
While introducing better and faster service is critical for local residents, it’s also important to take care of the surrounding greenspaces as they play a crucial role in bringing the community together.
Earth Day clean-up
A group of 17 Metrolinx staff and community members took part in the West Toronto Railpath cleanup which began near Ernest Avenue and went all the way to Dupont Street collecting nearly 6 bags of trash and debris.
Other cleanup locations include the Lower Don Trail in partnership with OnTrack Alliance, Moss Park, Etobicoke, Scarborough, Corktown, Liberty Village, a stretch between Kennedy and Eglinton - plus many more.
As Metrolinx continues to build critical transit infrastructure today, to meet the needs of tomorrow, the agency aims to foster relationships with the communities in which they operate, and part of that work includes creating a cleaner environment.
