Oct. 16 – The Ontario government and Metrolinx have started the search for partners to design and build the five new stations included in the Yonge North Subway Extension.

The project will bring TTC Line 1 subway service approximately eight kilometres farther north from Finch Station into York Region, with new stations in Toronto, Vaughan, Markham, and Richmond Hill.

A request for qualifications (RFQ) has been issued for the stations, rail and systems contract, which covers detailed design and construction of the extension’s five new stations, and installing tracks, signals, and support systems.

The package of work also includes construction of emergency exit buildings and a train storage facility, utility relocation work, and modifications at Finch Station to connect the extension to the existing TTC Line 1 subway service.

Interested companies can respond to the RFQ by submitting their qualifications and expertise in design and construction. Metrolinx and Infrastructure Ontario will review those submissions and create a shortlist of qualified companies that will be invited to submit full bids through a request for proposals.

The RFQ is posted on MERX as part of Infrastructure Ontario’s standard procurement process.

Starting the search for partners to deliver the Yonge North Subway Extension’s stations, rail, and systems contract is another important step toward making travel faster and easier for more people in York Region and Toronto. This much-needed project will also stimulate the economy and create local employment, supporting as many as 4,300 jobs during each year of construction.

First look at new stations

New conceptual designs have been shared, showing what the five new stations could look like. The renderings serve as a starting point for the future project partners, who will refine the designs as they follow Metrolinx guidelines and standards.

Three of the stations – Steeles, Clark, and Royal Orchard – will be built underground. Bridge and High Tech stations will be at surface level.

The stations will feature efficient, modern layouts that prioritize safety and accessibility. Wide concourses, escalators and elevators will make it easy to move through the stations, while natural light and clean lines will create bright, welcoming spaces. Each station will be designed with convenient connections to buses, GO trains (at Bridge Station), cycling, and pedestrian routes.

The new stations along the extension will bring transit closer to 26,000 more people and 22,900 more job opportunities while reducing travel times by up to 22 minutes.

Progress update

With a contract for tunnelling recently awarded, both major contracts required to deliver the Yonge North Subway Extension are now in motion. Work has already started to prepare for the excavation of the launch shaft, where the future tunnel boring machines will begin digging.

Utility relocations are also underway along the line to ensure future construction proceeds smoothly, and early upgrades have been completed at Finch Station to prepare for the connection to existing TTC Line 1 service.
