Major construction contract awarded for Yonge North Subway Extension advance tunnelling project.
Aug. 8 – The Ontario government and Metrolinx have taken a big step closer to breaking ground on major construction for the Yonge North Subway Extension.
The Ontario government announced on Aug. 6, 2025, that North End Connectors has been awarded a contract to design and build the tunnels for the subway extension. The contract was awarded through a competitive procurement process led by Metrolinx and Infrastructure Ontario.
The construction team is comprised of firms with proven experience in transit infrastructure projects:
- Applicant leads: Aecon Infrastructure Management Inc., Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas Canada Ltd., Ghella Canada Ltd.
- Construction prime team members: Aecon Infrastructure Management Inc., Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas Canada Ltd., Ghella Canada Ltd.
- Design prime team members: EXP Services Inc., TYPSA Inc.
The Yonge North Subway Extension will bring TTC Line 1 service north from Finch Station through north Toronto to Vaughan, Markham and Richmond Hill – with five new stations along a route of approximately eight kilometres. The extension will save riders up to 22 minutes a trip from Markham to downtown Toronto. A newly proposed transit hub at Bridge Station will make it even easier to connect to GO trains, GO buses, and regional and local transit routes.

North End Connectors will be responsible for designing the tunnels, supplying the tunnel boring machines, and constructing the launch and extraction shafts. They’ll also build the underground support structures for future stations and emergency exit buildings.
Work has already started to get ready for tunnelling. Existing utilities along the route are being relocated, and early upgrades at Finch Station are substantially complete.
The Yonge North Subway Extension is just one part of a once-in-a-generation expansion of the region’s transportation network that will put hundreds of thousands of people within walking distance of fast, reliable transit. From new subways and light rail lines to expanded GO service, this important expansion – the largest of its kind in Canada – will transform how people move throughout the region by giving them more choice and easier ways to get where they’re going.
