Cassandra Walton, Senior Operation Controller – Rail Signals

My 2 years with Metrolinx has been nothing short of amazing. I started off as a Bus Operations Controller and in my short time with the company I made a lateral move to Rail Operations Controller and then to my current role as a Senior Operation Controller – Rail Signals. I still can’t believe the amount of opportunity there is for career advancement. The people who work for Metrolinx want you to succeed, making the work environment unlike any other I’ve experienced. Everyone is extremely supportive, inclusive and enjoyable to work with.

People should want to work for Metrolinx for the endless opportunities. In house development is always possible through the MX university – so many courses to choose from to expand your qualifications and skills. Work life balance is always taken into consideration with scheduling and not to mention the great pension!

It is tough for women in law enforcement positions to “prove themselves” as capable of doing a job that has been male dominated for so long. I know that I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the women who came before me in this role. Part of the reason the transit safety officer position at Metrolinx was appealing to me was the fact that the compensation, treatment and expectations were the same for everyone doing the same job. I also work with a lot of great people who make my days enjoyable.

I joined Metrolinx as a Project Coordinator back in 2006, 15 years later, I am a Manager within CPG and still love what I do. My job consists primarily of overseeing the design and construction of transit infrastructure, ensuring that capital projects are delivered on time and on budget. As someone who commutes via the GO Train every day, I have a firsthand understanding of what impact my work has on the public at large. I derive a true sense of satisfaction and accomplishment upon completion of a project, knowing that my hard work has contributed to a safer, more enjoyable commute for the customer.

Beyond the challenging and meaningful work we do at Metrolinx, what has kept me here over the years are the strong interpersonal relationships I have forged. Many of my work colleagues have become personal friends outside of the work environment. Several of them even attended my wedding. From the outside looking in, we appear to be your typical government agency. However, upon closer inspection, you’d be pleasantly surprised to discover that Metrolinx is a welcoming family environment.
