Emergency exit buildings
A total of six emergency exit buildings (EEBs) will be built as part of the Yonge North Subway Extension to support safe subway operations.
The EEBs will be located between the underground stations and are a standard safety feature of modern underground transit lines. In the unlikely event of an emergency, they provide a safe way to reach the surface and allow first responders to quickly access the tunnels.
There's more to an emergency exit building than what can be seen at street level. Construction usually starts by digging down to the subway tunnels to build the underground part of the exit route. The surface-level portion is built later and can be a small, standalone structure or incorporated into an existing building, depending on the location and design.
Our approach to designing the EEBs will be to make sure they blend in as much as possible with the surrounding area.
Locations have been confirmed for three of the emergency exit buildings, between the future tunnel portal and Clark Station. Work is underway to finalize the locations of the three remaining EEBs.
Kirk Drive
The northernmost emergency exit building along the Yonge North Subway Extension will be located in Markham along Kirk Drive, south of the future tunnel portal.

Inverlochy Boulevard
This emergency exit building will be located north of the future Royal Orchard Station, on the northeast corner of a property on Inverlochy Boulevard that faces Bay Thorn Drive.

This emergency exit building will be located along Yonge Street, south of John Street. Work to prepare for construction started in March 2026.
