VIDEO: New Rutherford GO pedestrian bridge finds forever home

Metrolinx’s contractors have successfully lifted the new Rutherford GO pedestrian bridge into place.

Jan 22, 2021

It was about substantial heft and quick timing.

After months of planning and preparation, a recent pedestrian bridge was lifted and set in place at Rutherford GO within a short overnight window. The work began after the last train of the night passed, with crews rigging the bridge to the crane. After performing the final checks and tests, the bridge was lifted into its final position over the tracks just after one am.

This major construction milestone connects the fourth floor of the new parking garage to the future east rail platform. Later this year, commuters will use this pedestrian bridge to cross over the tracks and board their GO trains from the east platform.

Customers who wish to access the east platform arriving at ground level – such as transit users, pedestrians, or cyclists – will also be able to access the east platform via a pedestrian tunnel underpass.

The bridge lift is a key achievement, bringing customers closer to a new and improved Rutherford GO Station, with more parking spaces, a new station building, and modern customer amenities.

The new Rutherford GO Station and grade separation is part of the GO Expansion program and will support more frequent, future two-way, all-day train service on core segments of the Barrie corridor.

And when complete, the new infrastructure will improve connections to York Region transit as well as enhance access for pedestrians and cyclists.
