Expected Completion: 2022

Construction is commencing which will bring major improvements to Rutherford GO. Upon completion, the improved site will create a new station building, a 1250 space parking garage, an upgraded bus loop and passenger drop-off/pick-up area and a grade separation that will ensure traffic flow along Rutherford Rd. is no longer impacted by passing trains.

Our contractor will implement a temporary closure of Rutherford Road to prepare the crossing for construction on the grade separation. Here’s what you can expect:

  • The full closure will occur from Friday, November 29 at 11 p.m. until Sunday, December 1 at 11 a.m.
  • There will be overnight work. Construction crews will be working continuously 24 hours/day during the closure to finish the work as quickly as possible
  • Rutherford Road will be closed from Westburne Drive to Peter Rupert Avenue. There will be no pedestrian or vehicle access for the public from Friday night to Sunday late morning.
  • Access to the current bus loop located on Rutherford Rd between Westburne Drive and Peter Rupert Ave will be relocated to 635 Westburne Dr. (see map)
  • In preparation for the Rutherford Road closure, daytime and overnight pre-work will be carried out the weekend prior on Saturday, November 23. This will involve a minor overnight track closure on the Barrie GO line. Customers will not be impacted by this closure.

We’re making it easier for you to get in and out of the station, no matter how you get to Rutherford. For drivers we are building a parking structure that will add 1,200 covered spaces with direct connections to a new station building. For pedestrians and cyclists, we’re building a pedestrian bridge over Rutherford Road with dedicated bike lanes on Rutherford to give you more options for getting safely to the station. The station will also have an upgraded bus loop for more seamless connections to York Region Transit along with an improved Kiss & Ride.

We’re transforming Rutherford GO with more service today and delivering on a promise to further increase service in the future. To date, Metrolinx has made progress expanding service but there is more work to be done. Upgrades to Rutherford GO will provide you 15-minute two-way GO service with about 6,000 trains per week.

The Rutherford Road grade separation from Westburne Drive to Peter Rupert Avenue will enhance community safety and prevent drivers from having to wait at the rail crossing. When coupled with the increased pedestrian and cyclist connectivity, Rutherford GO will provide a safe and accessible station regardless of how you choose to get there.
