Making room for the Hurontario LRT in Mississauga City Centre

Mississauga residents may have noticed construction crews working in the middle of a busy road.

What’s the deal with all that construction on Hurontario near Square One?

You might have heard a neighbour say that, or maybe you’ve wondered it yourself.

The answer is a simple one. Building the Hurontario Light Rail Transit (LRT) project.

Right now, Metrolinx and its constructor, Mobilinx, are removing medians along Hurontario in the City Centre area of Mississauga. Major construction for the Hurontario LRT has begun and this is one of the first noticeable change to the corridor in this busy part of the City.

Why do medians need to be removed?

Construction crews are taking out the medians along Hurontario for two reasons.

  • To make more room for vehicles to circulate when crews need to change traffic flow (for example temporarily closing lanes).
  • The most important reason. Once the medians are gone and the road is widened, crews will start installing the LRT tracks and stops where the medians used to be.

Making room for a new rapid transit line is a big job. So far, construction crews have removed more than 8,900 meters of concrete medians along Hurontario street.
