Usually, we’re all over the Toronto map when we publish updates on the Eglinton Crosstown’s light rail transit (LRT) project – moving from one spot to another.

But this time, we want to focus in on one key section, and a new video clip and images that show progress that’s far away from the public eye.

The Eglinton Crosstown has installed 98 per cent of all rail on the project. Between Eglinton and Avenue Stations, work is now well underway to install the final pieces.

Within Eglinton Station, caissons – strong retaining structures – that were used to support TTC tunnel underpinning previously stood directly over the track bed. With the pouring of the upper concourse, these caissons were no longer needed and many have been removed, making room for track installation at the platform level.

In these two pictures, you can see caissons that previously supported the TTC subway tunnels have now been cut, clearing the track bed for rail installation.

Not that all the caissons have been stripped out. In the photo below, you can see additional caissons still stand on the platform. These will be removed at a later date.
