And down it goes.

In December, customers started using the new station building at Rutherford GO, which includes customer washrooms, digital displays and is fully accessible with ramps, railings and accessible washroom facilities. With the new station building amenity operational, crews needed to remove the old station building.

The new station building amenity opened while major construction continues at the project site.

The project contractor followed a safe and methodical process to deconstruct the building and protect the surrounding areas. Barriers were installed to prevent impact to the new adjacent building.

The process consisted of stripping the building interior of any retainable materials, using an excavator to break down the structure. Crews carried out an organized hauling plan to efficiently transport materials off-site. Following the removal of the above-ground structure, excavation work will continue to dig up the building foundations.

Work at Rutherford GO supports the GO Expansion program. Through GO Expansion, Metrolinx will steadily increase service over the next 8 to 10 years leading to a minimum of 15-minute frequency in each direction and extend beyond Aurora GO to Bradford GO Station. Barrie South and Allandale Waterfront will see 30-minute service two-way, all-day GO service.

Expansion on the Barrie GO line includes creating a seamless connection to the future Eglinton Crosstown light rail transit route via Caledonia GO Station, a new station project.

These investments, and GO Expansion as a whole, are critical to transform the GO rail network into a comprehensive, all day rapid transit network.
