More construction is happening on GO’s Lakeshore East Line, which will impact traffic on Toronto’s Danforth Avenue.

The upcoming work is part of the massive GO Expansion project, bringing communities one step closer to faster and more frequent GO train service on the Lakeshore East Line.

The traffic impacts are necessary to expand the Danforth bridge, which one of several important bridges along the Lakeshore East GO tracks. The work being done now will accommodate a future fourth track to deliver faster, more frequent GO rail service.

Starting in November, Danforth Avenue will be reduced to a single lane in both directions while Metrolinx widens the existing pier of the rail overpass between Scotia Avenue and Eastwood Avenue. For those not familiar with the area, that’s east of Warden Avenue and west of Birchmount Road.

This specific work (stage one) will be ongoing until late December.

Sidewalks on either side of Danforth Avenue will remain open as car traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction.

The TTC bus stop, servicing bus route 20, located at Medford and Danforth Avenue will be relocated 50 metres west on Danforth Avenue.

The traffic reconfiguration will also allow crews set up a safe working perimeter around the centre of the road, where there will be no public access.

Delineators will be in place, and directional signage will be installed. Other stages of work on the bridge will follow, and residents can expect to see construction activity into spring 2022. Metrolinx will continue to share advance notice and details of any traffic impacts.

Residents can expect to see construction vehicles and equipment along the tracks, on Danforth Avenue, and in the surrounding areas, including pile driving equipment, bulldozers, cranes, excavators, concrete trucks, and dump trucks.

Due to the nature of this work, noise, vibration dust, and site lighting can be anticipated.

Metrolinx understands the inconvenience of the closure, and crews will be working hard to get the job done safely and as quickly as possible. Work will occur five days a week (Monday to Friday) between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.

People travelling in the area should leave themselves extra time as it could take longer than usual to drive through the construction zone.

Work on the Danforth bridge is part of the Lakeshore East GO Line Expansion project in Toronto, which includes grading, retaining walls, constructing a new culvert and bridge widening to accommodate a future fourth track. By building on what is there today, Metrolinx can improve infrastructure that will deliver faster, two-way, all-day, 15-minute service on core segments of the network.
