Solar energy power GO stations and save energy costs

The transit agency is tapping into solar at a number of stations. Let’s shine some light on that.

We often talk about the power of good public transit.

But you also need a considerable amount of energy to keep people moving, including through stations.

That’s where the sun comes streaming in.

Metrolinx has installed roof-mounted solar photovoltaic panels at four stations and have saved almost $1.8 million in energy costs to date. That will translate to estimated savings of $7 million to $8.3 million over the 25 to 30-year lifecycle of the panels.

The solar panels are installed at Oakville GO, Clarkson GO, Erindale GO and Ajax GO and have not only saved money, but have also tapped into a clean and renewable energy source. Using the panels have avoided more than 245 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions – equal to planting more than 17,000 trees or removing 53 passenger vehicles from the road each year.

Metrolinx expects the installation of solar panels to continue to be used on future stations, saving as much as 30 per cent of a building’s monthly energy bill.

That’s power delivered from up high. So as we all begin to get outside more to soak up the sun, Metrolinx is already energized by the rays.
