In response to declining case numbers and high vaccination rates, the Chief Medical Officer of Health confirmed that as of June 11, 2022, it will be optional to wear masks or face coverings while using public transit – including on GO Transit and UP Express.

Masks are always welcome for those that choose to wear them as they continue to be an effective way to protect yourself and those around you.

All customers are asked to respect their fellow commuters’ personal choices.

Throughout the pandemic, Metrolinx has followed the direction and advice from the province’s Chief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH) – whether that has been on vaccination, working-from-home, masks or air quality – we have all been learning and adjusting for the past two plus years to keep everyone, including staff and customers, as safe as possible.  

Everyone has different comfort levels and unique personal circumstances – some may continue to wear masks and others may welcome the change.

What will not change is the Metrolinx commitment to customer safety.

Throughout the pandemic, Metrolinx implemented dozens of safety measures that have helped ensure there were no outbreaks on trains or buses. Many of these COVID-19 related protocols and policies remain in effect.

For example, the GO-VAXX mobile vaccine clinics will continue to be on the road ensuring as many people as possible have access to vaccines. Improved air quality efforts also remain in effect.

Metrolinx will continue to monitor the impact of COVID-19, and the direction from the medical experts, as the days go on.
