Metrolinx is extending future all-day GO train service further north on the Barrie Line.

The transit agency announced today (Aug. 12) that through the GO Expansion program, 15-minute, two-way, all-day electrified GO train service will extend past Aurora GO Station to Bradford GO in the future. Barrie South and Allandale Waterfront will see 30-minute two-way, all-day GO service as part of GO Expansion.

Metrolinx officials say the change is possible thanks to further study and optimization of service plans.

The GO Expansion program will deliver improved service across the GO train network, with 15-minute two-way all-day service on core segments. The end goal is to create a transit network that isn’t just for commuters heading into downtown Toronto and with service so frequent, customers don’t require a schedule. 

As for timelines on service increases. The major GO Expansion contract is currently in the procurement phase. Once a successful bidder is selected there will be more information about timelines and service levels.

In the meantime, Metrolinx continues to incrementally add more service across the GO Network.

What this means for York Region and Simcoe County

Phil Verster, Metrolinx President and CEO says 15-minute, two-way, all-day GO service to Bradford will connect the community in new ways.

“Whether you commute to downtown Toronto for work, take your kids to hockey practice in East Gwillimbury, or want to travel to the Allandale Waterfront with your family on the weekend, Barrie GO expansion will empower you to live the life you want to live,” he says.

Verster says Metrolinx is building more than 1,200 kilometers of rapid transit across the region to ensure more than 80% percent of residents will live within two kilometres of rapid transit.

By 2041, York Region is anticipated to grow by more than 50 per cent and Metrolinx is committed to keeping up with that growth.

By bringing the GO Expansion program to reality, faster and more frequent electric GO trains will not only provide more travel options, but will also reduce congestion across the region.
