Metrolinx closer to two-way all-day service on Kitchener Line
How a new agreement with CN lays the foundation for faster, more frequent service.
Oct 21, 2025
Metrolinx is making progress on delivering two-way, all-day service on the Kitchener Line.
The next step to bring faster, more frequent service is an agreement-in-principle to purchase a portion of the 26.2 kilometres of track between Bramalea and Georgetown GO stations, currently owned and operated by CN Rail. The purchase will grant Metrolinx full control over all infrastructure and service changes across the entire corridor – including the section between Bramalea and Georgetown – previously fully owned by CN.
The acquisition of the land and infrastructure is a critical first step in unlocking faster, more frequent service along the Kitchener Line.
Metrolinx will also build more than 40 km of new track, modify and improve existing infrastructure including signaling systems, bridges and platforms, in addition to other supporting work.
This is a multi-year undertaking, that once complete, will enable Metrolinx to operate independently from CN freight trains, providing two-way, all-day hourly service to Kitchener and Guelph, and two-way all-day 30-minute service to Mt. Pleasant, seven days a week.
Construction is set to begin once designs are finalized.
Currently, Metrolinx primarily operates on a single track on much of the Kitchener GO Line between Bramalea and Kitchener GO stations, limiting the frequency of two-way GO rail service.
Progress on the Kitchener Line
In addition to the agreement with CN, Metrolinx continues to make key upgrades on parts of the Kitchener Line that will also help enable two-way all-day GO service. This includes a key package of work completed earlier this year along the Kitchener GO Line, including a 2.6km passing track in Breslau, platform improvements at Guelph Central GO Station and a new storage track west of Guelph.
Since 2018, trips between Kitchener and Union Station have more than doubled from 40 to 95, while travel times have been reduced by an average of 15 minutes.
Metrolinx added several express trips along the line between Kitchener and Toronto, and increased service to every 30 minutes for midday and evening trips between Bramalea GO and Union stations.
Working to the future
All this ongoing work is part of Metrolinx’s core mission to connect communities and build a more sustainable, accessible transportation network.
GO Expansionis the largest program of its kind in North America. It’s part of a more than $70 billion transit expansion, including new subways and light rail transit lines that will bring vast improvements in reach and connectivity across the region, from Barrie to Niagara, Kitchener, Oshawa, Toronto and more.
As each phase of work is completed, riders can expect incremental improvements as Metrolinx expands service and further connects the region.
