Popular Union Station pedestrian route closing for upgrades

With ridership down due to COVID-19, Metrolinx is speeding up some critical construction projects.

May 22, 2020

During a rare period of quiet, construction projects are picking up steam at Canada’s busiest transit hub.

As the province moves towards the recovery phase and transit ridership remains relatively low due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Metrolinx is finding ways to speed up some critical construction projects.

Beginning Monday, May 25, Metrolinx will close the Bay East Teamway, including the stairs leading to train platforms, to accelerate renovation work. Construction crews are upgrading ceiling, flooring, windows, doors and digital signage. The Teamway will reopen in fall 2020. In the future, this teamway will connect the new Union Station Bus Terminal with the new CIBC Square commercial tower at 141 Bay Street.

How will I access my train?

Customers will still have many options for accessing their train platforms during this closure. When boarding at Union Station customers can access platforms 4 to 13 and platforms 24 to 27 from the Bay West Teamway. For customers boarding at platform 3, there is still access to the platform from the Union Station Bus Terminal on the east side of Bay Street or from the GO York Concourse.

For customers’ safety, when exiting trains at Union Station, the exits at the east end of the platform will be closed for construction. Metrolinx asks that you adhere to posted signs to safely exit the platform and do not enter construction areas. Remember to spread out along platforms, stay behind the yellow line and do not cross train tracks.

Customer safety is Metrolinx’s top priority. The transit agency is committed to closely monitoring the number of customers on GO vehicles and in stations and will re-open the Bay East Teamway before fall 2020 if customer volumes increase significantly.

These critical upgrades to the Bay East Teamway are part of Metrolinx’s Union Station revitalization work which also includes the opening of the new Bay Concourse later this year.
