In preparation for future excavation work to support construction of Cosburn Station, crews must build concrete reinforced slurry walls. These walls form the station's perimeter, giving it the strength to hold back soil, resist train loads by limiting ground movement, and keep groundwater out over the life of the station. Slurry refers to the clay and water mixture used to temporarily stabilize a trench while concrete is poured to create the wall. The use of specialized equipment called a hydromill will be in operation on site as part of this slurry wall construction. This equipment will be running consistently throughout regular construction working hours.
Residents may notice the presence of new equipment, along with the associated noise and activity levels. The hydromill is a critical component of the excavation process and will be utilized over the next 10 months.
