What is Happening?

Metrolinx crews will be erecting a girder and conducting substructure works for the Barrie GO rail line at the site of the Sheppard Rail Bridge. This work will require lane reductions on Sheppard Avenue for the following periods: One eastbound lane will be closed from May to July 2026. One lane in each direction will be closed from May to September 2026. 1 westbound lane will be closed from July to September 2026. A full road closure of Sheppard Avenue between Vitti Street and Chesswood Drive will occur in October 2026. A detour route will be in place in addition to wayfinding signage.

What to expect

Construction lighting may be visible from the work site.
Where possible, lights from equipment will be positioned away from residential homes to keep light pollution levels low.
Trucks and construction equipment may generate dust during construction.
Crews will take precautions to monitor and reduce dust.
Increased presence of construction vehicles and equipment can be expected in the work area.
Please exercise caution around active construction sites.
Work may be delayed or rescheduled due to weather or unforeseen circumstances
Trucks will stage inside the work site and will not stage outside of the site boundaries

Traffic Changes

Sheppard Avenue West will be closed for periods of time during the work. Signage will redirect traffic around the work zones.
Alternating lanes on Sheppard Avenue West will be reduced for periods of time during the work. Signage will redirect traffic around the work zones.
A paid duty officer, flaggers and detour signs will be onsite to direct traffic as needed.

Pedestrian Access

Temporary sidewalk closures or pedestrian detours will be in place while the work is underway, with signs in place to direct pedestrians as needed.

Noise and Vibration

Residences and businesses in the area may experience noise and vibration caused by construction equipment related to this work.
Crews will take measures to minimize disruptions to the surrounding area wherever possible.
To minimize noise impacts on the community, noise and vibration monitoring equipment will be installed prior to construction. These devices will help to detect exceedances early to proactively conduct corrective actions as needed while crews work.
Trucks accessing the site will be equipped with broadband backup alarms, which emit a less disruptive sound compared to traditional beeping backup alarms.
