Metrolinx gives away firewood as part of vegetation management program

Metrolinx hosting York Region firewood giveaway

Metrolinx and its contractor hold firewood giveaway events for York Region community.

Jul 14, 2022

As part of Metrolinx’s vegetation management program, the transit agency is giving away firewood to communities. The aim of these events is to divert wood waste from landfills.

Metrolinx is in the midst of growing GO Transit – a project known as GO Expansion. And while this work will make GO Transit service faster and more efficient for the whole region, it also involves removing vegetation and trees.

Removal of trees along the GO tracks in York Region is happening in some spots to prepare for the electrification of the network. Meanwhile, Metrolinx is replanting thousands of trees and shrubs across the region – in fact, more than 25,000 native trees and shrubs have been planted in the last few years.

Teams from Metrolinx and Grascan are joined by GO Bear at the recent firewood giveaway at Old Elm...

The giveaways will take place at East Gwillimbury and Whitchurch-Stouffville. (Metrolinx photo)

Where to get free firewood

Residents can drive by to pick up two full bags of chopped firewood at these two locations:

  • East Gwillimbury GO Station: Saturday July 16, between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.
  • Old Elm GO Station in Stouffville: Saturday July 23 between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

When customers arrive, vehicles will be directed in a line to a pick-up point to receive their firewood. Then, each person will be responsible for loading the wood into their vehicle.
