Modernizing Kennedy Station
Adapting infrastructure at a key transit hub to extend Line 2 subway service
May 27, 2026
Kennedy Station is undergoing a transformation to extend the TTC’s Line 2 subway by nearly eight kilometres. Work is ongoing inside and outside of the existing station to modernize and update the infrastructure required to make it happen.
New buildings to support station ventilation and systems are taking shape outside, and four new rooms are being built at the platform level inside the station to house the modernized communications network, safety and security systems and integration with new power systems.
Doing this work at an active station site requires careful coordination with our partners at the TTC. Construction materials are at times delivered to Kennedy Station along the Line 2 subway tracks using TTC work cars during off-revenue hours. To minimize impact to transit riders, the 170 cubic metres of concrete required for the structures were delivered from outside the station, at the surface, through pipes running towards the east end of the station platform.
Crews have also been preparing for the excavation of the underground structure that will connect the station to the tunnel boring machine extraction shaft at Eglinton Avenue East and Midland Avenue. To prepare for excavation, crews are busy drilling 1,226 concrete piles to form a strong perimeter around the excavation area.
Providing connections to GO, and the TTC’s Line 2 and Line 5, Kennedy Station is a growing, adapting and modernizing transportation hub.
