Bridge construction is part of the Bowmanville Extension to expand GO service

Dec. 10 - Starting as soon as Jan. 12, 2026, Simcoe Street in Oshawa will close between Avenue and Albany streets as work gets underway to replace the Simcoe Street Bridge.

Metrolinx will expand the rail corridor in the area and add a new GO train track as part of the Bowmanville Extension project, which will expand GO rail service from Oshawa to Bowmanville.

The Bowmanville Extension is a long-anticipated investment for Durham Region and part of Metrolinx’s broader plan to build major projects to ease congestion, improve affordability and connect communities across the region. Once complete, the extension will add 18.7 kilometres to the Lakeshore East Line, connecting more of Durham Region to fast, reliable, two-way, all-day GO service.

Why a full closure is required

The existing Simcoe Street bridge is more than 100 years old and nearing the end of its service life.   The new bridge will be higher, longer and realigned to meet current engineering standards. Replacing the bridge is anticipated to take approximately two years.

Detour routes and traffic mitigation

Signal adjustments, advance turn signals and dedicated turn lanes will be introduced at key locations during construction to support traffic flow. These areas will be monitored throughout construction, with adjustments made as needed.

For pedestrians, a detour will be available via the Michael Starr Trail, and access will be maintained at Olive Street throughout construction. Local residential traffic will also continue to have access during the work.

Additionally, beginning Jan. 3, we will be adding a bus stop on Gibb Street, east of Stevenson Road for routes 52, 56 and 92, to further help the flow of traffic in this area.

Durham Region, Metrolinx and the contractor will monitor traffic conditions and refine measures as needed during construction.
