Deal ensures continued reliable service on GO Transit and UP Express through 2031

Mar. 24 - Metrolinx has signed a five‑year extension with Alstom to continue operating and maintaining the GO Transit and UP Express rail fleets — ensuring consistent, reliable service for customers across the region.

The $1.3‑billion agreement runs until 2031 and maintains more than 1,100 direct Alstom jobs across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, including operations staff, crew members, customer service teams and maintenance personnel.

Alstom has been a longstanding partner in the delivery of GO rail and UP Express service. In 2024–25, the team operated more than 117,000 GO rail trips and over 56,000 UP Express trips, while consistently achieving on‑time performance above 97 per cent across a busy, mixed‑use rail corridor.

A continued focus on dependable train service

Ensuring a dependable customer experience remains a top priority as Metrolinx delivers more service and stations through GO Expansion.

“Customers count on GO Transit and UP Express every day, and partnership is essential to delivering the reliable service they expect and deserve,” said Michael Lindsay, President and CEO of Metrolinx. “This extension ensures continuity as we advance the modernization of the network to support faster, more frequent service as part of GO Expansion.”

Skilled jobs and strong performance

Alstom has more than 1,100 employees who help keep customers moving safely across the GO Transit and UP Express network. These include train operators, conductors, customer service personnel, fleet technicians and other skilled workers.

“Whether it's introducing new riders to transit during Toronto’s biggest special events, or helping ensure frequent riders have a reliable, high-quality experience every time, Alstom has been behind the scenes helping deliver for Metrolinx and its passengers,” said Michael Keroullé, Americas Region President at Alstom.

“Our continued partnership with Metrolinx is a tribute to the excellence and experience of our local Services team to ensure passenger needs are met safely and efficiently.”

The extended partnership ensures customers can continue relying on safe, consistent rail service — today and into the next decade.
