Major Hamilton LRT contract awarded

May 4 - The Ontario Government, Government of Canada and Metrolinx have announced that Hamilton Transit Alliance, led by Aecon Infrastructure with Hatch, Egis and Systra as designers has been selected through a competitive procurement process to deliver the first major package of work on the Hamilton LRT. This contract includes preparatory work along the LRT route, including utility relocations, grade separations, road reconstruction and upgraded sidewalks and traffic control systems. 

Once complete, this new transit line will bring 14 kilometres of frequent and reliable light-rail transit through Hamilton, with stops at McMaster University, Hamilton Stadium, Eastgate Square, Ottawa Street, Gage Park, downtown Hamilton and other key destinations.  

The LRT will support 16,400 new daily trips, bring better connections to local and regional transit with 17 new transit stops, and move approximately 50,000 riders daily.  

Shovels are already in the ground on the project with early works and utility relocation projects. 

Once complete, the project will have delivered other key civil and utility infrastructure improvements to the City of Hamilton, including:  

• 14kms of sewer replacement and separation
• 16kms of watermain replacement
• 14kms of road reconstruction
• 28kms of replaced and upgraded sidewalks
• 62 upgraded and replaced traffic signals

With the award of this contract, the project now enters an alliance development phase to progress designs, costs, and construction schedule. The development phase will last 18-24 months. 

By partnering directly with private sector companies to form an “Alliance," rather than administering a third-party consortium this allows for greater flexibility and collaboration among project participants and ensures that everyone involved is working on a “best-for-project" basis.  

There will be a second procurement which will include stops, rail, and systems. 

Progress on the Hamilton LRT is another example that the region’s transit system is expanding now and into the future. With brand new lines and stations opening and more service on the way, the scale of progress is massive and can be seen across the region.
