Metrolinx is working to increase frontline presence at Union Station.
April 20 - Metrolinx is taking key steps to increase customer safety at Union Station and across the transit network ahead of the busy summer ridership season.
Starting April 20, Metrolinx is increasing police presence at Union Station, with Metrolinx special constables working alongside additional paid-duty Toronto Police officers. This will strengthen coordination, lower response times and ensure quicker interventions when needed.
Metrolinx special constables receive provincially mandated training aligned to Ontario Police College standards, with specialized transit and de‑escalation training to handle complex situations safely and professionally.
Metrolinx is also hiring more officers over the coming months. Active recruitment, hiring and training is currently underway to strengthen the frontline presence across the system.
On top of increasing the number of staff at stations, including Union Station, customer protection officers and other front line transit staff are being equipped with body-worn-cameras.

Whether it’s more people returning to the office, summer concert season or major sporting events like the 2026 FIFA World Cup™ — Metrolinx is expecting more people to choose transit, and the transit agency’s CEO say they will be ready.
“As we prepare for an unprecedented surge of riders — more than half a million additional GO and UP Express customers during the World Cup alone — safety remains our top priority,” says Michael Lindsay Metrolinx President and CEO.
“Enhanced Transit Safety Officer coverage and increased police presence are all part of the comprehensive planning we’ve been doing for months to ensure every rider, whether they’re heading to a match, a concert or their daily commute, feels confident on our system.”
With these improvements, Metrolinx is making a significant investment in safety. For riders, staff and communities — safety comes first.
