GO Expansion moving into next major construction phase

Mar. 31 – Metrolinx is moving into the next stage of GO Expansion, a multi-year construction project that will deliver one of the most significant service increases to the GO rail network.

As construction continues, signalling work will begin along the Lakeshore lines, along with major construction on the Lakeshore East Line, including work on tracks, stations, bridges and grade separations.

Building for GO Expansion

To build efficiently, some work requires weekend closures, overnight construction, or temporary schedule changes.

These short-term disruptions give crews longer, uninterrupted work windows to complete more work at once, helping avoid longer disruptions in the future.

Construction is well-underway across five GO corridors, including:

  • Three new grade separations at Burloak, Galloway and Finch Avenue East
  • Station upgrades at Exhibition, Long Branch, Bloor, Aurora, King City, Exhibition and Maple
  • Five new stations under construction: Woodbine, East Harbour, Bloor–Lansdowne, St. Clair–Old Weston and Caledonia
  • A brand-new south concourse at Union Station, as well as wider platforms and increased track capacity
  • Service extensions to Kitchener and Bowmanville

Major upgrades complete

In recent years, the GO network has completed major upgrades to unlock more capacity, remove bottlenecks and prepare for a future with more frequent, reliable rail service. These projects include:

  • Twin rail tunnels beneath Highways 401 and 409
  • Four new or improved stations: Bloomington, Old Elm, Confederation and Mount Dennis
  • A completely rebuilt Bay concourse and new Union Station bus terminal
  • Three grade separations at Davenport Diamond, Rutherford Road and Steeles Avenue East
  • Station upgrades at Rutherford, Bradford, Bramalea, Malton, Weston, Cooksville, Kipling, Unionville, Milliken, Agincourt, Kennedy and Eglinton GO

More service than ever before

Since April 2024, Ontario has added more than 300 weekly train trips across the network – the largest GO Transit service increase in over a decade.

This included:

  • A 15 per cent increase in weekly service
  • More train service on the Milton, Lakeshore East/West, Kitchener and Stouffville lines
  • 15-minute weekend service on both Lakeshore lines
  • New 30-minute weekday mid-day and evening service on the Kitchener Line between Bramalea and Union Station for the first time
  • Offering weekend train service to Kitchener for the first time, starting in November 2025

These are early steps toward much larger service improvements.

GO Expansion is a generational investment that will improve how people travel across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.
