Join Metrolinx for Rail Safety Week 2025

This important annual event puts a spotlight on education and safe practices around rail transit.

Sep 15, 2025

Every year, Metrolinx supports Operation Lifesaver’s Rail Safety Week (RSW).  From Monday, Sept. 15 to Sunday, Sept. 21, we'll be raising awareness and knowledge of safe rail practices with community members and transit riders across the region.

Safety is at the core of everything we do at Metrolinx. Each year, over 100 Canadians are seriously injured or lose their lives due to unsafe rail practices. So this RSW, we’re joining rail industry partners, safety organizations, law enforcement and elected officials to hold a series of events to help everyone safely navigate around rail transit, especially as Line 5 Eglinton and Line 6 Finch West draw closer to their opening dates.

Rail safety in your community

For RSW, we’re coming to communities across the region to educate and inspire everyone to practice safe behaviour around rail transit.

Here are just some of the events we have planned throughout the week. We hope to see you there!

Monday, Sept. 15

Today, we are kicking things off with GO Bear at Union Station’s York Concourse with a focus on stopping track tragedies. We’re also holding a pop-up event at Bradford GO Station.

Tuesday, Sept. 16

Look out for us at pop-up events at Markham GO, Bradford GO and Mount Pleasant GO stations where we’ll detail how Metrolinx works hand in hand with law enforcement and first responders to keep railways safe.

Wednesday Sept. 17

We’ll be at the Hazel McCallion Central Library in Mississauga with our friends from Operation Lifesaver to educate kids on staying safe around train tracks, stations and rail crossings. For riders travelling through Toronto, be sure to stop by our booth at Union Station’s York Concourse. You can also find us at Bradford GO.

Thursday, Sept. 18

Look out for us at Bloor and Brampton Innovation District GO stations. We will be focusing on bike safety and share key reminders on how to safely approach rail crossings.

Friday, Sept. 19

On the final weekday of RSW, we’ll be hosting a pop-up at Port Credit GO, focusing on the dangers of trespassing in restricted areas near rail crossings.

Trespassing on the land near railways is an all-too-common occurrence that can end tragically. Each year there are more than 2,100 incidents that sadly lead to injury or death.

Saturday Sept. 20

Over the weekend, look for us at the annual Fire Prevention Week event in Oakville on Saturday and be sure to take in some crucial fire safety tips (and a free hot dog) while you’re there!

We’re committed to putting safety first for everyone, from transit riders to communities to workers, we work year-round to keep our trains and rail network safe. But we can’t do it alone — safety is a shared responsibility. This Rail Safety Week, we invite you to join us at these events in your community to learn more about rail transit safety for all.
