A year of One Fare
How the program has helped transit riders in Ontario save money while getting where they need to go.
Apr 11, 2025
Last year, the province of Ontario and Metrolinx launched One Fare, integrating fares across transit systems and helping you save even more money when you take transit.
Since launch, the program has saved transit riders across the region over $123 million. And with PRESTO now available on Google Wallet and Apple Wallet, it's more accessible than ever. In fact, between February of last year and this year, there have been over 38 million transfers made using One Fare. It’s never been easier or more affordable to take transit to get where you need to go.
For transit riders like Anushree J. (AJ), a post-secondary student at the University of Toronto with a lengthy commute, the One Fare program has made a big difference. Over the past year, she saved approximately $143 each month with One Fare when commuting five days a week. Traveling between Kitchener GO station and Toronto, AJ gets to see the region’s beauty on a regular basis, watching the sun rise through the windows of the GO train as she sets off to class.
“I love enjoying the views from windows. Even after a year of commuting, it never gets old, and the scenery changes beautifully with the seasons,” AJ said.
Plus, with her university student ID, AJ gets to save even more with post-secondary fare types for both GO Transit and TTC.
“As a university student, [One Fare] saves me significant money. The convenience of having PRESTO on my phone wallet is especially appreciated during the winter months,” AJ said.

AJ’s morning commute gives her time to tackle readings for her classes, watch the sun rise, or squeeze in a nap. On the way home, AJ likes to listen to music, browse the internet, work on assignments or chat with her fellow commuters. In some ways it even feels like she’s the star of her own movie.
“I enjoy talking to strangers and meeting interesting people. If you’ve ever watched ‘18x12 Beyond Youthful Days,’ it feels like the main character’s life changing encounters during his own journey,” AJ said. “I’ve met many wonderful people on the train. Some I’ve kept in touch with and others I hope to see again.”
How One Fare works
One Fare makes taking transit the easier and more affordable choice. For an adult aged commuter using both GO Transit and TTC five days a week, savings could be as much as $1,600 each year.
It’s as simple as tapping on and tapping off as you normally would. Transfers are valid for two hours when using local transit agencies, but if you start on GO Transit, you’ll have a three-hour transfer window.
Through One Fare, you’ll only pay once when traveling between GO Transit, TTC, Brampton Transit, Durham Region Transit, MiWay and York Region Transit. Remember to tap on each time you travel on a participating transit agency and tap off when travelling on GO Transit, for the One Fare discount to take effect!
