Work will take place during the daytime between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm; overnight between 10:00 pm and 4:30 am, and 24 hours a day during the weekends.

Overnight & Weekend Rail Construction - Kitchener May 2026

What is Happening?

Metrolinx will be conducting rail construction, including track removal, ballast replacement, and installation of ballast mats to improve track stability and safety. This work will involve track preparation, utility daylighting (locating underground utilities using vacuum equipment), and delivery and storage of materials within the rail corridor. This work will take place along the Kitchener rail corridor between Bloor Street West and Lansdowne Avenue. Construction access, equipment staging, and material laydown will be located at 2280 Dundas Street West (Loblaws parking lot) and 222 Lansdowne Avenue (No Frills parking lot). We understand that overnight work may be disruptive. Metrolinx will make every effort to minimize impacts on the community and maintain public safety throughout this period.

What to expect

  • Where possible, lights from equipment will be positioned away from residential homes to keep light pollution levels low.

  • Increased presence of construction vehicles and equipment can be expected in the work area.

  • Work areas will be clearly marked or fenced off to ensure public safety.

  • Please exercise caution around active construction sites.

  • Work may be delayed or rescheduled due to weather or unforeseen circumstances.

  • Trucks will leave the site each day to move materials overnight. In certain circumstances, trucks may need to operate during the day.

  • Crews will take care to prevent damage to surrounding areas, including parking and staging locations.

  • Temporary access points and crossings will be installed within the rail corridor 

Traffic Changes

  • Minor delays may be experienced near the work zone.

  • Two-way directional traffic will be maintained during the work.

  • Construction vehicles may enter and exit the rail corridor periodically

  • Traffic control measures will be implemented as required to maintain safety.

  • All businesses in the area will remain open during the work. Please follow signage for access.

Pedestrian Access

  • All pedestrian sidewalks will remain open throughout the work.
  • Clear and defined walking paths will be maintained during construction to ensure pedestrian safety.

Noise and Vibration

  • Residences and businesses in the area may experience noise and vibration caused by construction equipment related to this work.

  • Crews will take measures to minimize disruptions to the surrounding area wherever possible.

  • Lighting plants will be positioned and directed away from nearby residential properties to reduce disturbance. 

  • Residences and businesses in the area can expect noise and vibration caused by construction equipment related to this work.

  • Construction crews will turn off equipment when not in use to help reduce unnecessary noise.

Transit Service

There will be no Kitchener line train service between May 15th and May 19th.
