Join Us for Rail Safety Week 2026

Sept. 14 – Every year, Metrolinx supports Operation Lifesaver’s Rail Safety Week. From Monday, Sept. 21 to Sunday, Sept. 27, Metrolinx will be highlighting rail safety education into communities across the region, encouraging people of all ages to stay alert and make safe choices around stations, trains, buses and rail crossings.  Metrolinx continuously enhances safety and security across the network, year-round, including rail crossing upgrades, expanded Special Constable presence, and school visits to educate children.  

Safety Starts with Us All 

Whether it's ignoring signs and signals at a rail crossing, crossing tracks in undesignated areas, entering restricted spaces, or walking along tracks, it's never worth the risk.  These preventable incidents reinforce the importance of making safe choices and following simple safety practices that help keep everyone safe. 

Whether you're a daily GO Transit commuter, an occasional UP Express rider, a driver, cyclist, pedestrian or parent, this week’s events offer an opportunity to connect with safety experts, community partners, and Metrolinx teams while learning more about rail safety in your community. 

Here are some of the events happening throughout the week.  

Monday, Sept. 21 

Rail Safety Week kicks off at Union Station – York Concourse with a focus on stopping track tragedies, alongside partners at Operation Lifesaver, Toronto Police Services, and Toronto Transit Commission (TTC). Stop by to meet GO Bear, chat with experts, and pick up rail safety resources.  

Tuesday, Sept. 22 

Tuesday's events at Langstaff and Finch Avenue grade crossings will focus on crossing safety. Alongside Operation Lifesaver, Metrolinx will be sharing reminders about railway signals and staying alert when travelling through crossing areas by car, bike or on foot. 

Wednesday, Sept. 23 

Look out for Metrolinx staff and community partners at Union Station, Aurora GO, and Markham GO. Metrolinx will be sharing information and practical tips about staying safe around train tracks, stations and rail crossings. 

Thursday, Sept. 24 

Thursday's activations at Bloor GO and Brampton GO will focus on safety around buses, trucks, school vehicles and rail infrastructure. Metrolinx will educate customers on bus safety and encourage safe travel behaviours. 

Friday, Sept. 25 

On Friday, teams will be at Bradford GO and Stavebank Road, focusing on the dangers of trespassing in restricted areas near rail corridors.    

Saturday, Sept. 26: Kids Safety Village of Durham Region 

Families are invited to visit the Kids Safety Village of Durham Region on Saturday, Sept. 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., for a family-friendly event featuring hands-on rail safety demonstrations and educational activities. Children can practice safe traffic and rail crossing habits while riding bicycles through the village. 

Residents can connect with Metrolinx safety experts, community engagement teams, and community partners. 

Located at 1129 Athol St. in Whitby, just a 10-minute walk from Whitby GO Station, the event is a great opportunity for families to learn how simple actions can help keep everyone safe around rail corridors, stations, crossings, and transit infrastructure. 

Key reminders while planning your visit: 

• This is a rain-or-shine event.
• Parking is available on-site for event attendees.
• GO Transit planned service adjustments (Sept. 26–27): Planned construction is taking place on Lakeshore East. GO trains will run between Durham College Oshawa GO and Ajax GO. GO buses will serve Durham College Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax and Pickering GO stations and run direct to Union Station Bus Terminal. There will be no GO Transit service at Rouge Hill, Guildwood, Eglinton, Scarborough or Danforth GO stations. For more information, head to the GO Transit website.
• The venue has an accessible parking space located near the main entrance, a ramped entryway, single-level pathways with curb cuts, and enlarged washrooms available on-site.

Throughout the year, our station staff, Customer Service Ambassadors, Special Constables, and safety teams work every day to help customers travel safely and confidently. 

If you see someone behaving unsafely, like trespassing on tracks, please report it immediately. Notify the Metrolinx Customer Protective Services team or text ‘HELP’ to 77777. Transit Security Dispatchers are available 24/7 in the event of an emergency or safety concern.
