The extension will provide frequent, reliable GO train service across Durham Region.
Metrolinx has awarded the major construction contract for the Bowmanville Extension, which will expand GO rail service farther into Durham Region.
The project will add 18.7 kilometres of new track to the Lakeshore East Line, extending service from Durham College Oshawa GO Station to the future site of Bowmanville GO Station.
The first phase of construction includes upgrades to Durham College Oshawa GO Station and the VIA building, bridge reconstruction and modifications, and utility relocations. Future phases will add new tracks and signals; new bridges, including a rail bridge over Highway 401; and improved road crossings.
One of the project’s first major activities will be the reconstruction of the Simcoe Street bridge, which will allow for an additional GO track.
Early work — such as including installing a new watermain on Albert Street in Oshawa, completing geotechnical studies along the planned route and clearing vegetation near the CPKC rail line, began in March 2025.
Once complete, the Bowmanville Extension will provide frequent, reliable service while reducing travel times to Union Station by 15 minutes. Riders can expect train service every half hour during peak periods, hourly during off-peak periods and every two hours on weekends.
The Bowmanville Extension will strengthen regional transit connections by supporting nearly 17,000 daily trips and 4.9 million annual boardings by 2041.
