Metrolinx final COVID-19 update for 2020

Since the pandemic began in March 2020, Metrolinx has kept customers and communities updated.

Dec 31, 2020

In the past two weeks, four additional Metrolinx employees have tested positive for COVID-19. The affected staff members were either working from home or consistently wore their face coverings and kept their distance while at work and are now recovering at home.

Out of over 4,300 Metrolinx employees, 49 have now tested positive for COVID-19. To date, there have been no outbreaks on our system as our safety protocols have helped limit – and stay ahead – of the spread of the virus.

With virus numbers rapidly escalating with over 3,300 cases today alone in Ontario, the province-wide shutdown began on Boxing Day.  GO Transit and UP Express continued to be there for you, as public transit is an essential service. However, public health has recommended travel be limited to essential trips only – work or medical appointments, or to get food and prescriptions.

With that in mind, Metrolinx is breaking a long-standing New Year’s Eve tradition and not providing free transit service nor additional late-night service. Please keep your celebrations to your household only and party with those you live with, call a friend or watch a celebration online such as the CN Tower light show.

A vaccine is now a reality giving hope of returning to normal sometime in 2021, but we are not there quite yet. To help us get there, it is critically important to not let down your guard, and recommit to the basics from public health:

  • Stay home as much as possible
  • Stay home if ill or potentially exposed to COVID-19
  • Wear a face covering and ensure both the nose and mouth is covered at all times (Check out the Metrolinx PPE dispensers and branded masks)
  • Wash your hands regularly and use hand sanitizer
  • Download the COVID Alert App.
