Make a stop at these five must-visit Scarborough eateries

The future Scarborough Subway Extension will make getting to local food hot spots even easier.

May 28, 2025

Scarborough is known for many things, but its food is especially renowned as some of the best Toronto has to offer. With the Scarborough Subway Extension, it will be even easier and faster to get to the area’s distinctive eateries on transit.

Construction is well underway on the Scarborough Subway Extension, a nearly eight-kilometre add-on to the Toronto Transit Commission’s Line 2 subway that will bring you closer to all the great food Scarborough has to offer – including these five great local spots that you can check out today.

Lawrence and McCowan Station will be the first of three new stops along the future extension. If you make a stop there today, make sure to pop into Kerala Kafe, where you can find authentic Indian cuisine from Kerala, a state on the southwestern coast of India. Located at 3258 Lawrence Ave., this family-owned cafe offers a variety of rich flavours steeped in tradition and cultural richness. Try the kizhi beef – a traditional Kerala dish and a popular special on their menu.

Farther east along the extension, close to the future Scarborough Centre Station, Country Bakery & Market is a must-visit spot for tasty traditional British pastries. The bakery is located at 1601 Ellesmere Rd. and serves up a delectable array of specialty baked treats including Victoria sponge cake and Scotch eggs.

Mere steps away, be sure to swing by Hyderabad Biryani Hut – a local favourite that packs a punch. Known for their aromatic mixed rice dishes that incorporate hand-picked veggies and high-quality meats, the restaurant also serves up a mouthwatering variety of other plates that delight (and sizzle!). Located at 1587 Ellesmere Rd., this restaurant is also just minutes away from the future Scarborough Centre Station.

Farther north, Island Spice Flava is a short walk from the future Sheppard and McCowan Station. It’s a local staple with – unsurprisingly – a lot of flavour! It’s located at 365 Pitfield Rd. and is well known for its barbeque jerk chicken. Sheppard and McCowan Station might be the last stop on the extension, but it’s fair to say your first taste of Island Spice Flava won’t be your last.

A final stop to consider on this mini food tour? Share in a time-honoured local tradition and get a hot dog from the popular stand outside of the Canadian Tire at 4630 Sheppard Ave. East. Comfort food meets convenience at this local favourite; nothing beats a hot dog or a sausage in a bun on a nice day shopping in Scarborough.

Whether you’re going to work, shopping around town, or just looking for a delicious bite, the new three-stop subway extension will bring you closer to what makes Scarborough Scarborough.
