Metrolinx Considers Next Steps Following Scheduled End of Discounted Double Fare Program

TORONTO: January 21, 2020 – The Discounted Double Fare (DDF) program is a three-year agreement between GO Transit/UP Express and the TTC and funded by the Province of Ontario. The program offered PRESTO card users a $1.50 discount on their fare when transferring between GO/UP and TTC.

The agreement will end as scheduled on March 31, 2020.

The program was funded by the Province up to $18.4 million annually and exceeded this allotted budget each year – by $2.6 million in 2018-2019 and is expected to do so by $6.7 million in 2019-2020. Metrolinx has covered the $9.3-million shortfall since the launch of the program.

Metrolinx will be bringing forward solutions in the near future to help our customers travel through the region using different methods of transit.

Since 2018, Metrolinx has introduced programs such as Kids GO Free, Sunday Funday and lowered short-distance fares for GO Transit. Metrolinx has also increased service on GO Transit by 33% in the last two years.

Metrolinx and the Ministry of Transportation will continue to work collaboratively with all of its municipal partners, towards more accessible and affordable transit across the region.

Changes to the DDF program do not affect other co-fare agreements with the 905 transit agencies, as these are separate agreements. These co-fare agreements were designed to encourage and make it easier for customers to get to a GO Station.
