GO Transit and UP Express Prepare for Winter Storm

TORONTO: March 1, 2016 – Environment Canada has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the region forecasting hazardous weather conditions including 15 to 20 centimetres of snow, heavy at times, and strong winds. The winter weather could make travel difficult and impact GO Train, GO Bus and UP Express service.

We are proactively implementing a special schedule and safety measures for the morning of Wednesday, March 2 to ensure our customers get to their destinations safely and efficiently:

  • GO Trains will operate on an adjusted schedule that will allow as many trains to run as possible. This will include focusing on trips that do not require trains to switch from one set of tracks to another, which will in turn reduce the likelihood of switch problems due to snow and ice build-up.
  • Accordingly, some express trips will be cancelled as we focus on providing all-stop trips. This will avoid the need to switch tracks and allow as many customers as possible to get on our trains and get where they need to be. The following trips do not need to switch tracks and will still run as express:
    • The 7:53 a.m. express trip from Oshawa to Union
    • The 5:00 p.m., 5:37 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. trips from Union, express to Clarkson and then all stops to Hamilton
  • UP Express will be operating on a 30-minute schedule beginning at 5:30 a.m.
  • Maintenance contractors will proactively inspect rail corridors, vehicles and equipment.
  • Updates will be provided to GO customers on the GO Service Updates page and through On The GO Alerts, and on social media.
  • In the case of extreme weather, stations will stay open until the last train for our customer’s comfort.

We are committed to getting our customers where they need to be safely and comfortably. We encourage customers to check our website for up-to-date service information, sign up for On The GO alerts, check the departure boards at stations and terminals and listen for announcements, and monitor social media and news media for updates on weather and GO and UP Express service.

Suggestions for commuters:

  • Check your GO Train or GO Bus schedule for schedule adjustments.
  • Prepare ahead and give yourself lots of travel time.
  • Sign up for On The GO Alerts to ensure you get the latest updates.
  • Check gotransit.com, social media channels @GOTransit and @UPexpress, and news media for updates before heading out.
  • Be especially mindful while travelling during heavy snow and wind—visibility may be significantly reduced for both you and other drivers.
  • Be patient and stay safe.
