WHAT WILL BE ACHIEVED
With implementation of the Regional Transportation Plan, the GTHA’s transportation system will
be transformed into an effective, integrated, multi-modal transportation system. Schedules 1 and
2 illustrate the significantly expanded regional rapid transit and highway network that GTHA
residents and businesses can expect. These road and transit projects will be supported by the
comprehensive suite of Priority Actions and Supporting Policies that are outlined in section 4.0.
What will it all mean to the average person? Modelling conducted in support of the RTP
demonstrates that, even in the face of significant population growth, the changes will indeed be
profound. As illustrated in Table 4, the RTP will provide significant benefits, including reduced
commuting times, improved access to transit, increased use of transit, and more walking and
cycling. The modelling forecasts represent conservative forecasts of what the RTP can be
expected to achieve. It is important to note that the model is limited in its ability to forecast the
likely impacts of the supporting policies and programs that are proposed in the RTP. With these
included, the true results with respect to each of these indicators is likely to be even greater than
is shown below. The bottom line will be a stronger and more competitive economy, a healthier
environment, and a higher quality of life for those who live and work in the GTHA.
