After a Benefits Case Analysis (BCA) is completed for a project, the results are reviewed.
The Metrolinx Board of Directors decides whether or not to further
develop the project by advancing it to the next stage of Planning,
Design and Engineering.
In this phase of work, the project is defined in detail to identify
required road space, which lanes the transit line will occupy, which
corner the stop, platform or station exit will be, how many vehicles are
needed, and where they will be stored. This also provides a better idea
of how much the project will cost.
The Planning, Design and Engineering phase 1 completes the design and
planning to a level sufficient for a transit Environmental Assessment to
be completed.
Projects that are now in Planning, Design and Engineering phase 1
development:
Hamilton King-Main Rapid Transit
Hurontario-Main Rapid Transit
After Planning, Design and Engineering phase 1, a transit Environmental
Assessment can be completed. This six-month review is called a
Transit
Project Assessment Process.
If the Transit Project Assessment Process is approved, the project
can move to Planning, Design and Engineering phase 2 to complete 30 per
cent of the design.

Hamilton King-Main Rapid Transit
The City of Hamilton is working with Metrolinx on the Hamilton King-Main corridor – a project that will help transform the way the
region moves.
The Benefits Case Analysis for this project informed the scope and
direction for the Planning, Design and Engineering work plan. It was
funded by $3 million announced by the Government of Ontario in April
2009.
The Planning, Design and Engineering for Hamilton King-Main is
focused on Light Rail Transit from Eastgate Square to McMaster
University along the King-Main corridor. The project is currently moving
towards completing the Transit Project Assessment Process.

Hurontario-Main Rapid Transit
The City of Mississauga, City of Brampton and Metrolinx are working
together to further develop the Hurontario-Main Rapid Transit project
with a focus on Light Rail Transit. Following on the corridor master
plan work and the Benefits Case Analysis for this corridor, the
Planning, Design and Engineering phase will work towards completing the
Transit Project Assessment Process.
