Future Initiatives

TPI is always investigating new ideas for joint procurements on behalf of Ontario transit systems. These ideas have been identified/raised by our valued partners and TPI’s five-year strategic plan.

Electric Bus

In 2015, TPI organized an Electric Bus Workshop and a follow-up meeting that were well attended by bus manufacturers, academics and subject matter experts in the field of battery powered electric vehicles. Participants took away a greater knowledge of the evolving technology around electric buses, the limitations, as well as, the benefits of the networking opportunity.

The level of interest in Electric Buses is increasing and TPI will be dedicating resources over the next few years and working with all interested stakeholders in order to support Ontario’s transit partners as this major technology evolves for a future joint procurement.

TPI continues to be engaged with CUTRIC (Canadian Urban Research & Innovation Consortium), through Metrolinx’s founding member participation, as well as the development of the Pan-Ontario Electric Bus Consortium with participating transit stakeholders including OEM’s and utility companies. This is a very important initiative in assisting Ontario’s efforts to thoroughly evaluate electric bus technologies for the future.

Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)

TPI is committed to staying informed about the latest technologies and trends for alternative fuels to help Ontario’s transit agencies better understand the latest CNG bus advances, needed infrastructure and costs. TPI is building a library of research studies on CNG technology through industry workshops and other transit agencies’ experiences.

OPTA Procurement Committee

The Ontario Public Transit Association has established a Procurement Committee Forum where member transit agencies discuss joint and cooperative procurement ideas. TPI will be playing a role in this Forum to communicate the value added through TPI’s projects.
