Regional Transportation Plan Review and Update

What We’re Doing

Metrolinx’s Regional Transportation Plan (RTP) guides the work being done to transform the transportation network in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA).

This work includes the massive transformation of the GO rail network with the GO RER program, moving forward on the Eglinton Crosstown LRT, and the Toronto-York Spadina subway extension.

Metrolinx is also advancing procurement of the Hamilton, Hurontario and Finch West LRTs.

The review and update of the RTP is happening in phases and our engagement activities are aligned with the coordinated review of four provincial land use plans: the Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe, the Greenbelt Plan, the Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan, and the Niagara Escarpment Plan.

Your Opinion Matters

As part of our update process, a review of the RTP began in spring 2015, and a Discussion Paper summarizing the review’s findings was just published in August 2016.

This Discussion Paper is part of the process of updating the plan and we need feedback from you.

After gathering feedback from individuals and groups across the region, a revised draft of the RTP will be published in late 2017, followed by an implementation plan in 2018-2019.

Why We’re Doing It

It was recognized when Metrolinx was created in 2006 that our Regional Transportation Plan should be regularly reviewed in order to ensure it continues to reflect the transportation priorities of the region.

While Metrolinx and its partners in the region have been working to implement projects and initiatives envisioned in the plan, we have also been conducting background research and technical analysis to ensure emerging factors are considered in our planning.

The review and update of the RTP provides the opportunity to formally incorporate new insights into the plan, while ensuring we maintain momentum on the projects underway.

Quick Facts

  • Over $32 billion worth of projects are underway in support of the RTP
  • Our public transit system includes 11 separately governed local transit agencies, one regional transit provider, GO Transit, and the Union Pearson Express
  • Metrolinx has been working with its partners on improving accessibility and integration of the transportation network across the GTHA and between local transit agencies
  • Improvements to the transportation network will continue to support the development of livable communities where people, regardless of age, income or ability, can meet their daily needs without having to rely on the private automobile
