Metrolinx Celebrates Smart Commute Award Winners

TORONTO: November 25, 2016 – Last night at the 2016 Smart Commute Awards, one individual and six Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) employers were recognized for their exceptional achievements in promoting smart travel options such as walking, cycling, transit, carpooling and teleworking.

An independent Awards Review Panel has selected an Employer of the Year for each of the six regions from which nominations were received, and from those finalists, a Smart Commute Regional Employer of the Year Award was announced.

New this year is the introduction of the Bike to School Week Awards. Each of the six regions was presented with an award to recognize the efforts to encourage students to bike to school and the resulting accomplishments.

Employer of the Year Awards

This year’s 2016 Employer of the Year recipients include, from Durham Region, the Town of Ajax, from Halton Region, the Town of Halton Hills, from Peel Region, Colliers International, from Toronto, LUSH Cosmetics and from York Region, Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority, and from Hamilton, Hamilton Health Sciences. Hamilton Health Sciences also has the distinct pleasure in being the Regional Employer of the Year Award Winner.

Honourable mentions this year include Canadian Tire Corporation and IMAX.

The 2016 Rising Star Award was presented to Javelin Technologies Inc. Katharine Gatto, Southlake Regional Health Centre was presented with this year’s Smart Commute Champion Award.

Bike to School Week Awards

The six regional municipalities were recognised for their work to promote and support school and student participation in Bike to School Week, May 2016. This program is a key component of their wider work to encourage active and sustainable school travel in the region. The regions and their partners from the School Boards, and participating schools were at the Award ceremony to collect their Awards.

“I would like to congratulate all of this year’s Smart Commute Award winners for their achievements,” said Leslie Woo, Metrolinx’s Chief Planning Officer. “Smart Commute workplaces and schools set an example for all of us, demonstrating that it is possible to make small changes to our daily commute to impact change across the region.”

The Smart Commute Awards were introduced in 2007 to officially recognize employer members and partners who have put forth exceptional effort in implementing their Smart Commute programs. These awards acknowledge outstanding commitment, leadership, innovation and results.

Smart Commute is a program of Metrolinx and the municipalities in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. Smart Commute helps anyone who is going from A to B explore and try out smart travel options such as walking, cycling, transit and carpooling. Our goal is to ease gridlock while helping you save time and money. To date, more than 325 employers with 706,000 employees have signed on to the program and are designated Smart Commute workplaces.
