Metrolinx has facilitated a project promoting easier and more convenient cross-boundary travel for people who use mobility aids.
Eight paratransit agencies have signed an agreement which eliminates the need for mobility aid users to undergo multiple eligibility processes.
If you are a mobility aid user registered (in good standing) with a paratransit agency in the municipality you live in, you are now automatically eligible for paratransit services with seven other transit agencies as well.
The agreement came into effect on January 1, 2014, and includes the following paratransit agencies:
- Burlington Handi-Van
- Durham Region Specialized Services
- Hamilton ATS-D.A.R.T.S
- Milton access+
- Oakville care-A-van
- Peel TransHelp
- TTC Wheel-Trans
- York Mobility Plus
This new agreement will make it easier for paratransit users to transfer between their paratransit service and the service in an adjacent community. Customers can also use paratransit service to get to and from an accessible conventional transit service, like GO Transit, VIVA or Züm.
For more information, paratransit users are asked to contact each agency directly, and please have their client ID and trip request information available when calling each agency to arrange services.
The Cross-Boundary Specialized Transit Improvement Steering Committee is comprised of 12 conventional transit and paratransit service agencies across the GTHA, led by Metrolinx. The committee works to address barriers to cross-boundary travel for specialized transit users and was responsible for implementing this initiative.
