Getting around the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) is getting tougher and tougher. Our roads and our public transit systems simply aren’t up to the job of efficiently and effectively carrying all the people who are trying to use them. In response to these serious issues, the Government of Ontario passed
legislation that created the agency with a mandate to improve the coordination and integration of all modes of transportation in the region.
The McGuinty Government encouraged Metrolinx to deliver a plan that will fundamentally improve our quality of life in the GTHA. A Metrolinx plan for a seamless, integrated transportation network, with a real focus on public transit, will mean that people and businesses can move easier from York and Durham, through Toronto, Peel, Halton and onward to Hamilton.
Metrolinx is the final piece in a three-part approach by the Provincial government to prepare the Greater Toronto and Hamilton region for growth and sustained prosperity. Building on the work of the Greenbelt, which protects more than 1.8 million acres of environmentally sensitive and agricultural land in the heart of the region, and Places to Grow, a plan that coordinates population and job growth, Metrolinx will develop a world-class transportation system.
