	High-speed intra-city rail High-speed rail service within a region is a mainstay of successful transportation networks. Linking major centres across the region, systems like the RER in Paris and MTA express trains in New York City offer fast, convenient rail service outside the urban core. Regional transit is increasingly recognized as priority to increase economic productivity. For example, London’s £16 billion, 118-kilometre east-west Crossrail line is expected to bring £20 billion to the UK’s economy. It will be substantially or entirely developed with private funds, and will dramatically shorten real distances across the metropolis.

About Us

Getting around the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) is getting tougher and tougher. Our roads and our public transit systems simply aren’t up to the job of efficiently and effectively carrying all the people who are trying to use them. In response to these serious issues, the Government of Ontario passed legislation that created the agency with a mandate to improve the coordination and integration of all modes of transportation in the region.

The McGuinty Government encouraged Metrolinx to deliver a plan that will fundamentally improve our quality of life in the GTHA. A Metrolinx plan for a seamless, integrated transportation network, with a real focus on public transit, will mean that people and businesses can move easier from York and Durham, through Toronto, Peel, Halton and onward to Hamilton.

Metrolinx is the final piece in a three-part approach by the Provincial government to prepare the Greater Toronto and Hamilton region for growth and sustained prosperity. Building on the work of the Greenbelt, which protects more than 1.8 million acres of environmentally sensitive and agricultural land in the heart of the region, and Places to Grow, a plan that coordinates population and job growth, Metrolinx will develop a world-class transportation system.
